Paul volunteered for the mission on September 3, 1968, flying as the crew chief in the lead gunship in support of a combat operation near Rach Kein, south of Saigon. Before he left, Paul stopped by Robert’s room to borrow a uniform shirt; none of his were clean.

The ship’s pilot that morning was Captain David Burch.2 Warrant Officer Ronald Cederlund3 was the copilot, and Specialist Fourth Class Ed Davis completed the crew as the door gunner.

Weeks later, in the Burns Ward at a hospital in San Antonio, Ed Davis told recently discharged Victor Milford, another member of the 191st, what happened on that mission. Victor recounts the conversation:

Ed said, “We had Charlie. They were in spider holes, and we were trying to root them out. I was laying down on a spider hole, and my gun jams. I’m trying to clear the jam and I look up briefly to see the Charlie come out with an Alaska-47. He fired.”
